Trial of suspects in killing of ARISE TV journalist delayed again over lead prosecutor’s absence

Proceedings in the trial of 11 men accused of killing ARISE correspondent Somtochukwu Maduagwu and security guard Barnabas Danlami were again delayed on Thursday at a Federal High Court, Abuja Division, after the lead prosecutor failed to appear in court.
The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, adjourned the case after prosecution counsel, Ms Adama Musa, was absent, reportedly engaged in another criminal matter.
During the sitting, one of the defence lawyers K.P. Samson informed the court that members of the prosecution team were on their way and proposed new dates for continuation of trial.
Mr Idris accepted the suggestion, noting that the proposed dates fell after the Ramadan period.
All the defence lawyers present did not oppose the adjustment.
“We all agree this matter is adjourned to 21,22,23, April,” Mr Idris said.
Thursday’s development marks the second disruption to proceedings within the week.
On Monday, the case could not go on after officials of the Nigerian Correctional Services failed to produce the defendants in court, claiming they were unaware of the scheduled hearing despite prior notice.
The defendants, who are standing trial on a nine-count charge bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and murder, were eventually produced on Tuesday when the trial formally opened.
At that sitting, witnesses recounted how armed men invaded Unique Apartments in the early hours of September 29, 2025, looting valuables and attacking Ms Maduagwu and Mr Danlami.
Justice Idris, while adjourning the matter on Thursday, expressed hope that the prosecution would be able to conclude its case on the next dates, ensuring the case was solved before Christmas.
