Troops of the Nigerian Army on patrol along the Zaki-Biam–Wukari Road in Benue State on Monday rescued a soldier and nine other victims kidnapped by suspected kidnappers.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ahmad Zubairu, the acting media information officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE, said the victims were rescued from a bush after troops foiled further operations by kidnappers in police uniform around Quarantine Checkpoint.

Mr Zubairu said the development followed credible intelligence about kidnapping activities in the area, with the suspects dressed in police uniforms to deceive road users.

“Upon receiving the information, the troops mobilised swiftly to the scene. On sighting the approaching soldiers, the kidnappers fled in disarray into nearby bushes. The troops immediately pursued the fleeing suspects, following their tracks deep into the forest. During the search operations, ten kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.

“Among those rescued was Warrant Officer John Richard, a personnel of 6 Brigade Band, Jalingo, while two other victims are still unaccounted for as search operations continue. The rescued individuals were kept in safe custody and debriefed before being handed over to appropriate authorities for further action,” Mr Zubairu said.

The force commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Moses Gara, commended the troops for their swift response and commitment to protecting citizens.

Mr Gara also commended the tactical commander for his exemplary leadership and proactive measures in combating criminal activities within the general area.

He urged troops to sustain the tempo and continue upholding the tenets of discipline and professionalism in all operations.
