Trucker arraigned for alleged reckless driving, crushing eight-year-old to death in Ibadan

A 43-year-old driver, Nura Usman, on Thursday, stood before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ court Ibadan, Oyo State, to answer charges bordering on alleged dangerous driving and causing the death of a minor.
The defendant was charged on two-counts of dangerous driving and causing death.
During his arraignment, an interpreter was provided to translate the charge to the defendant in Hausa.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Sikiru Opaleye, alleged that the defendant committed the offence on January 31, at Ojoo.
He alleged that the defendant recklessly drove a Howo articulated vehicle with registration no: ABC 441 XH, along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, Ojoo, Ibadan.
Mr Opaleye alleged that the defendant had no regards for other road users, by driving in excessive speed, leading to the death of an eight-year-old child.
Mr Opaleye said the offence contravenes the provisions of section 5 of the Federal Highway Act, Cap 135, Law of the Federation, 2000 as well as the provisions of section 18, of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 148, Law of Oyo State 2000 .
The Chief Magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10 million with one surety in like sum
The court held that the surety must be chairman of truck drivers in Ojoo, Ibadan.
She adjourned the case until August 11, for hearing.(NAN)
