Truckload of cannabis intercepted in Lagos: Police

The police command in Lagos says it intercepted a truck conveying substances suspected to be Indian hemp during an early morning patrol in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said this on Friday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
She said that the operatives of the Special Squad attached to the Arena Base, Elemoro, in Ibeju-Lekki, intercepted the truck.
Ms Adebisi said the interception occurred on January 18, when the truck driver attempted to evade arrest upon seeing the operatives.
“In the course of fleeing, the driver drove into a street where the vehicle could not pass through. He subsequently abandoned the truck and escaped on foot, evading arrest,” she said.
The spokesperson said that although the suspect was not apprehended, the operatives successfully impounded the vehicle along with its contents.
“A preliminary search of the truck revealed about 10 jumbo sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, which were recovered as exhibits,” she said.
According to her, investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the vehicle’s owner.
She said this would help track down and arrest other individuals involved in the suspected criminal activity.
“As of now, no suspect is in custody, but efforts are being intensified to trace the owner of the truck, which will lead to the arrest of others involved,” Ms Adebisi said.
