Trump asks House Speaker to declare Minnesota seat vacant after prosecutors found Ilhan Omar used fake identity
President Donald Trump has called on Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Michael Johnson, to declare Minnesota’s seat vacant amid revelations that Ilhan Omar, a Democratic lawmaker, used a fake identity to get elected.
Mr Trump made this call in a post on social media on Thursday, citing revelations from ongoing investigations into allegations of Ms Omar’s involvement in immigration fraud.
“Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat. Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to fraud, and she will not be legally allowed to be a member of this august body from this point forth,” Mr Trump said.
Mr Trump, who pointed out that Ms Omar risked being jailed and deported, said, “Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must immediately resign from Congress.”
He alleged that Ms Omar used a fake identity to get elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, adding that Ms Omar shares the same surname with her ex-husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, another immigration scandal under investigation.
“It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” Mr Trump said. And her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person they said she married and had children with.”
Citing Ms Omar’s interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Mr Trump said, “When asked whether or not she married her brother, she said, “Not to my knowledge.” In other words, she somehow didn’t know?
Aside from saying “Not to my knowledge” when asked about her reported marriage to her brother to bring him into the U.S. and secure him citizenship, Ms Omar dismissed the report as insane, adding it originated from a blog in her home country, Somalia.
Ms Omar has been in the eye of the storm over the past week after federal agents raided her Washington, D.C., home to execute a search warrant. She has condemned the raid as Ms Trump’s weaponisation of law enforcement agencies, while denying doing anything wrong.
Former President Barack Obama also dismissed investigations into Ms Omar’s alleged immigration fraud as a political witch-hunt a few days before the midterm elections.
