Trump fires Kristi Noem as homeland security boss, appoints Markwayne Mullin

The newly appointed DHS secretary will assume office on March 31.

President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, ousted Kristi Noem, his Department of Homeland Security Secretary, appointing Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her.

Mr Trump announced Mrs Noem’s ouster in a statement on Truth Social on Wednesday. The newly appointed DHS secretary will assume office on March 31.

“I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026,” Mr Trump said.

The American president said “The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at “Homeland.”

Mrs Noem was at the centre of Mr Trump’s border and immigration policy. Under her watch, the DHS carried out a massive crackdown on immigration, recording over two million self-deportations in 2025 and 670,000 removals of illegal immigrants.
