Trump insists on third term as U.S. president, says he’s not joking
President Donald Trump has said he is “not joking” about seeking a third term in office, a move prohibited by the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment.
Mr Trump, in an interview with NBC on Sunday, said there was a method to achieve it.
“A lot of people want me to do it,” Mr Trump told NBC’s Kristen Welker, discussing the possibility of a tenure extension. “But we have — my thinking is, we have a long way to go. I’m focused on the current.”
Asked if he wanted another term as president, Mr Trump said, “I like working.”
When asked to clarify what he meant, Mr Trump said, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.”
“There are methods which you could do it,” Mr Trump added, when asked how he plans to achieve his third term bid.
A third term for Mr Trump would violate the U.S. 22nd Amendment, a clause in the American Constitution that says no person “shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.”
A few days after Mr Trump made a historic return to the White House for a second term, Andy Ogles, House of Representatives of Tennessee, proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would see Mr Trump eligible for a third term.
