Trump: Iranian hardliners seek more concessions from U.S. amid midterm elections blow

Iranian hardliners have urged the country’s negotiators to demand greater concessions from the United States amid efforts to end the eight-month war, following President Donald Trump’s Republican Party’s defeat in the US midterm elections.
The CNN reported on saturday that Iranian hardliners believe Trump’s electoral setback has weakened his position.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, reinforced the position in a message on Wednesday, warning againsat the “slightest inclination towards submission,” a statement believed b y hardliners to be directed at the country’s negotiators.
Mr Trump admitted that the war partly contributed to his party’s electoral losses, while Vice President JD Vance wrote on X that “the reason we lost is the war.”
The comments reportedly encouraged Iranian conservatives, with hardline media outlet Raja News, arguing that Washington should not be allowed to secure a quick agreement without paying for its attack on Iran.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have continued, with Iranian negotiating team travelling between Tehran and Doha as Qatar attempts to bridge differences between the two sides.
A senior Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group, Hamidreza Azizi, told CNN that the election results were likely to strengthen Tehran’s position in negotiations, particularly over its nuclear programme.
Iran has reportedly outlined seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including an end to hostilities, compensation, withdrawal of US forces and lifting of sanctions.
Despite internal divisions between the hardliners’ favouring confrontation and moderates advocating diplomacy, analysts say Iran’s leadership is seeking an agreement that would end the war while strengthening its regional influence.
