Trump nominates Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative
President-elect Donald Trump has announced Jamieson Greer as his United States trade representative nominee, a key role in shaping America’s trade policies.
The announcement was made on Truth Social, where Mr Trump praised Mr Greer’s contributions during his first term.
“Jameson played a key role during my first term in imposing tariffs on China and others to combat unfair trade practices and replacing the failed NAFTA deal with USMCA, therefore making it much better for American Workers,” Mr Trump stated.
He also credited Mr Greer’s efforts under former USTR Bob Lighthizer for helping to revitalise U.S. manufacturing and reverse “decades of disastrous trade policies.”
Mr Trump highlighted Mr Greer’s planned priorities, including reducing the country’s trade deficit, defending American industries, and expanding export markets.
Mr Greer, currently a partner at the law firm King & Spalding, served as chief of staff at the USTR during Mr Trump’s administration in 2017-2021.
In that role, he was instrumental in negotiating the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA.
The trade pact was a signature achievement of Mr Trump’s presidency, aiming to modernise North American trade relations.
A native of Paradise, California, Mr Greer also brings military experience to the table, having served in the U.S. Air Force in Iraq, Turkey, and within America.
Mr Greer would likely face significant challenges, including addressing trade tensions with China and navigating global economic shifts if confirmed.
