Trump picks David Vance as presidential running mate

Former United States President and Republican Party nominee, Donald Trump, has chosen Ohio Senator James David Vance as his running mate ahead of the upcoming November presidential election in a push for his return to the White House.
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D,” Mr Trump said in a statement on Truth Social on Monday.
The announcement came less than 72 hours after Mr Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday with the former president saying he cannot allow the fear of an assassin to alter his plans.
Mr Vance is a 39-year-old newcomer who only entered into the Senate in 2022.
Mr Trump deemed him fit to be his running mate for reelection amongst other top names like Senator Marco Rubio, Senator Tim Scott, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Vivek Ramaswamy.
“Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honourably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association,” the statement added.
Mr Trump and Mr Vance’s nominations as Republican Party’s nominees for the 2024 presidential election are expected to be confirmed at the 2024 Republican National Convention starting on Monday till Thursday.
