U.S. President Donald Trump has opposed the potential emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s next supreme leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

Mr Trump said in an interview with Axios on Thursday that he must be involved in the selection of Iran’s next leader.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Mr Trump said.

“Khamenei’s son is a lightweight,” Mr Trump said. “I have to be involved in the appointment.”

The Jnr Khamenei is widely regarded as the most likely successor, following the death of his father in a joint attack launched by U.S. and Israel forces on February 28.

The slain Khamenei reigned over the Islamic Republic for over three decades after assuming power in 1989. The emergence of his son extends the Khamenei dynasty’s firm hold on power in the country.

Earlier on Tuesday, a group of Iranian officials coordinating the election to decide who succeeds the slain leader was bombed by Israeli forces.
