Trump’s son arrives Greenland amid dad’s interest in annexing island for U.S.
Donald Jr, son of President-elect Donald Trump, has arrived in Greenland weeks after his father floated the idea of securing the take control of the autonomous Danish territory for the United States once he returned to the White House.
Mr Trump first brought up the idea of buying the Arctic island during his first term as president, and again revived the discussion last month when he said “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security.
In the wake of his father’s intensified interest in the island, Donald Jr has now arrived in Greenland, stating he was going as a tourist on a “very long, personal, day-trip,” to talk to people, and had no meetings planned with government officials.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, said that the island was not for sale, adding Greenland is for the 57,000 Greenlanders.
“We are not for sale and we will not be for sale,” Mr Egede said in December. “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland.’’
Despite having wide-ranging autonomy, the economy of the island is still vastly subsidised by Copenhagen and it remains part of the kingdom of Denmark.
