Former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has described the death of a former national chairman of the party, Bamanga Tukur, as a monumental loss to Nigeria and the African business community.

Mr George made the assertion in a statement issued on Monday, saying he worked closely with Mr Tukur at the highest level of the PDP.

Mr Tukur died on Saturday in Abuja, three days before his 91st birthday, and was buried on Sunday in Yola, Adamawa State.

Mr George described the former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former Minister of Industry as “a confidant, a close ally and a patriotic stakeholder whose interests transcended geographical boundaries.”

The PDP chieftain said Mr Tukur was a statesman of great stature who contributed immensely to Nigeria’s political and economic development for several decades.

He said, “As the national chairman of PDP from 2012 to 2014, I worked with him closely. He was a patriot who was always thinking of how Nigeria could sit comfortably in the comity of nations as an economic giant. I praise his contributions to African enterprise and investment through his leadership of the Africa Business Roundtable and the NEPAD Business Group.

“As the general manager and chief executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 1975 to 1982, Tukur expanded critical maritime hubs like Apapa Port and Tin Can Island. Your departure leaves an immense void not only within our party structure but across the entire political landscape. During your tenure, you were more than a leader; you were a peacemaker, a mentor, and a tireless organiser who listened to every member, from the grassroots to the national level. I take comfort in the enduring legacy of your selflessness and the strong foundation you built for us.

“I also extend my deepest condolences to your family, loved ones and the entire party faithful. It is a great pleasure that you ran a good race. No doubt, your passing has left a significant void that will be difficult to fill. Our great leader, I say, you ran a good race and ended well. Continue to rest in the bosom of the Almighty God.”
