Two arraigned over alleged burglary, stealing 

The first defendant pleaded guilty to the charges, while the second defendant pleaded not guilty.

The police on Monday charged two men before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over charges of  alleged burglary, conspiracy and stealing.

The defendants are: Aliu Lawal, 20; and Hakeem Abuga, 32.

Lawal, a waste picker at Mile 12 market and Abuga of Ajumo Street in Mile 12,  are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, stealing and receiving stolen property.

The first defendant pleaded guilty to the charges, while the second defendant pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on December 29, 2025, at about 12:30 a.m. at Omojuwa Estate in Mile 12, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendants conspired to steal items from the residence of a complainant, one Ugunanyi Bonaventure, using a knife to threaten his daughter who was at home .

According to the prosecution, the first defendant allegedly broke into the building through the ceiling.

He alleged that he stole a Samsung mobile phone valued ₦280,000, 10 litres of groundnut oil valued at ₦34,000, and four pieces of 4-by-4 window glasses valued at ₦480,000.

He said that the total value of stolen  items amounted to ₦794,000.

The prosecutor further told the court that  the second defendant (Abuga) was  found in possession of the stolen Samsung phone, and was arrested for receiving stolen property.

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 287, 307(2) and 328 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, O.A Daodu ,granted the second defendant bail in the sum of N150,000, with two sureties in like sum. 

She adjourned the case until January 26,  for review of facts and sentencing for the first defendant, and for mention of the second defendant’s case.
