Two in police custody over Greek wildfire

Two men, aged 19 and 27, have been remanded in custody in connection with a wildfire that devastated forest land, farmland, homes, and businesses in the Western Greek city of Patras.
According to local media reports on Monday, the suspects are facing multiple counts of arson, including setting fires on both forested and non-forested areas.
Authorities alleged that they acted repeatedly and in collaboration, according to the reports.
Greek public broadcaster ERT said the 19-year-old suspect had confessed to starting the blaze and guided police to the ignition point in the Vounteni area near Sychaina.
His confession matched the findings by the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Unit.
The fire caused extensive damage before it was brought under control.
Officials confirmed the two suspects would remain in custody pending further legal proceedings, while investigations would continue.
This summer, Greece has been hit by a series of devastating wildfires that have scorched vast tracts of forest and farmland, forced evacuations, and caused widespread destruction.
