Two killed, two injured as truck crashes into busy Ibadan market

The police said that two people were killed and two others were injured.

A truck carrying 45,000 litres of premium motor spirit lost control on Tuesday and swept over a market in Beere, Ibadan, Oyo State, killing two and leaving others injured.

Footage of the incident showed a crowd at the fruit market along the Oje-Beere route in Ibadan South East Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, stated that two people were killed and two others were injured.

Mr Olayinka added that five tricycles and a car were damaged in the incident.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the incident occurred when a Mack truck belonging to Bovas Oil lost control while in motion from the Beere area and subsequently crashed along the Oje Market axis, resulting in the unfortunate death of a man and a woman, injuring two other persons, and damaging five tricycles as well as a Toyota Camry car.

“The truck was driven by a male adult who is currently at large,” the statement read.

Noting that police operatives had been mobilised to the area to restore normalcy, Mr Olayinka added that the command had commenced an investigation into the unfortunate incident.

“In view of the foregoing, the command has commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and is making concerted efforts to apprehend the fleeing driver,” he added.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the security operatives by providing any useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
