Two Lagos-bound suspects caught with 778 rail sleepers in Niger

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly vandalising rail line sleepers in Niger state.
Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger, Haruna Zurmi, said on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested at Mokwa with 778 rail sleepers on their way to Lagos State.
“On November 10, we arrested a driver with his conductor in Mokwa, a truck with registration number ESA 962 XJ containing 778 pieces of rail sleepers heading to Lagos from Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
“They are currently being investigated and effort is ongoing to arrest the owner of the truck and all those involved in the illegal act,” Mr Zurmi said.
The commandant expressed sadness over the continuous vandalism of public facilities by criminals and warned them to desist from the act or face the law.
“We shall leave no stone unturned in carrying out our constitutional mandate of protecting public facilities from criminals.
“We shall continue to work in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a crime-free environment in our area of supervision,” he said.
Mr Zurmi urged residents of the state to always support the corps with timely information.
