The police on Monday dragged two men before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over an alleged illegal sale of alcohol.

The defendants are Anthony Valentine, 35, and Ike Lovinous, 18.

The duo, whose addresses were not stated, are standing trial on a two-count charge bordering on the offence.

They each, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 31, at about 10:00 a.m. at Olokemeji Area of Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the first defendant unlawfully sold and authorised the sale of intoxicating liquor without a valid licence.

Mr Oriyomi alleged that on the same date, the second defendant also unlawfully sold and authorised the sale of intoxicating liquor without a licence.

The offences contravene the provisions of section 35(3)(4) of the Liquor Licensing Law Cap. 62 of Ekiti State.

Defence counsel, Gbenga Ariyibi and Gboyega Abiola, urged the court to grant the defendants bail on liberal terms, with a promise that they would not jump bail.

In his ruling, the chief magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.

He adjourned the case until August 27 for hearing.
