Two nabbed for poisoning 3,700 fish

The police on Monday arraigned one Sikiru Abideen, 52, and Kolawole Akintade, 54, in the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for poisoning 3,700 fish.
The police charge Messrs Abideen and Akintade, whose residential addresses were not provided, with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and cruelty to animals.
The prosecution counsel, Sikiru Ibrahim, told the court that the defendants committed the offence at about 7:15 a.m. on November 4 in the Oluyole area, Ibadan.
Mr Ibrahim alleged that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by using chemicals suspected to be poison to kill the fish in a pond.
He alleged that the defendants administered the chemical in the fish pond and disclosed that the offence contravened sections 249(d) and 495(d) of the Criminal laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, T.B. Oyekanmi, granted the defendants N200,000 bail each and two sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case until December 8 for a hearing.
