The U.S. has rejected France’s planned recognition of a Palestinian state, calling it a “reckless” decision that furthers Hamas propaganda.

“The United States strongly rejects @EmmanuelMacron’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state at the @UN general assembly,” Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, said in a post on X on Thursday.

Mr Rubio described President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state as a setback for peace and a slap on the victims of the Hamas attack on Israel.

“This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th,” Mr Rubio said.

On Thursday, Mr Macron announced that France will officially recognise Palestinian statehood in an unprecedented move by the European country amid growing international calls for Israel to end its war on Gaza.

“Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine,” Mr Macron said in a statement on social media on Thursday, adding that the French people want peace in the Middle East.
