The U.S. has alerted all its citizens to leave the Democratic Republic of Congo amid escalating violence due to rebel group activities in the country.

The U.S. Embassy in DRC, in a “security alert” on Monday, “advised U.S. citizens in the DRC to depart immediately via commercial means.”

“Due to the security situation in Kinshasa, the U.S. Embassy will not be conducting any visa interviews and will not be able to offer routine services for U.S. citizens,” the statement reads.

The U.S. security alert comes after the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23 captured Goma, the largest city in North Kivu province.

Over 700 people have been killed and thousands displaced in recent weeks as M23 rebels and Congolese soldiers clash.
