The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has warned Nigeria and other foreigners entering the U.S. against bringing bushmeat into the country.

In a post on X on Wednesday, CBP said bushmeat is among items prohibited to be imported into U.S.

“When travelling into the U.S., please note that bushmeat is prohibited to bring into the country,” CBP said. “Before you come back from your trip abroad, check CBP’s restricted items list about the items you plan to bring back.”

This comes as a reminder on the prohibition of bushmeat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while Ebola ravages some countries in Africa.

The CDC said bushmeat carry and spread diseases to human beings, adding “Bringing bushmeat into the U.S. is illegal.”

According to the CDC, bushmeat is meat from wild animals like rodents, monkeys, apes and bats. Bushmeat can carry diseases that can spread to people. “If you try to bring bushmeat to the U.S., it will be taken away and destroyed, and you may have to pay a fine,” the CBP said.
