United States President Joe Biden has suspended tariffs on imports from the United Kingdom as both governments negotiate over a dispute with Europe concerning subsidies for aerospace and tax breaks.

The U.S. has now agreed to a four-month suspension as they try to resolve the issue. In January, the UK dropped import levies on goods imported from the U.S.

On Thursday, the UK Trade Secretary Liz Truss said on her Twitter handle, “I’ve agreed with the U.S. to remove retaliatory tariffs on a range of UK goods: The removal of Scotch whisky tariffs of 25 percent; Removal of tariffs on cashmere, machinery and other products; A joint de-escalation of the Boeing-Airbus dispute.”

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) imposed the tariffs after its ruling that U.S.-based Boeing and EU aerospace manufacturer, Airbus, broke international trade rules by receiving state support.

In 2019, the U.S. imported £550 million worth of products from the U.K. before the tariffs were imposed, making the U.S. the biggest individual country market for UK exports.

Both governments have now allowed tariffs totalling $12bn to be imposed on a wide range of imports, which include Scotch whisky and other UK-made products such as cashmere, cheese and machinery.
