The United States has announced additional humanitarian assistance of over $64 million for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Julieta Valls Noyes, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration at the U.S. Department of State, made this announcement in Dakar, Senegal, through a press release issued by the office of the spokesperson on Monday.

Ms Noyes stated that this latest contribution, along with “recent announcements by Under Secretary Uzra Zeya, Ambassador Jeffrey Prescott, and Ambassador Michael J. Adler, brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance for Sub-Saharan Africa to more than $3.8 billion in Fiscal Year 2024.”

Stating that it is proud to be the largest single humanitarian donor to Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa globally, the U.S. explained that the assistance will enable its humanitarian partners “to meet urgent, lifesaving needs of refugees and other displaced and vulnerable populations across Sub-Saharan Africa.”

“It will also build durable solutions, including voluntary return in safety and dignity, and local integration within host communities,” the statement added.

While appealing for more support, the U.S. acknowledged the efforts by Senegal and other countries in the region to welcome “refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons in their communities.”

The U.S. stated that the Senegalese government’s example of incorporating refugees into national social and health services has played a key role in enhancing stability in the region.”

Other governments were, therefore, encouraged to follow Senegal’s example of refugee inclusion and advancing sustainable solutions.
