The United States has urged its citizens in Saudi Arabia to be vigilant following reported attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

The U.S. Mission in Saudi Arabia, in a security alert on Wednesday, said the attacks occurred despite ongoing hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia.

It stated that the Houthis had targeted Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports, and the military conflict has the potential to escalate.

“U.S. citizens should be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. We recommend checking your flight departure status directly with the airline and with the airport,” it said.

It warned its citizens not to travel near the Yemen border.

The mission further announced new travel restrictions for U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia.

The employees are also prohibited from travelling within 20 miles of the Yemen border due to safety risks.

According to the alert, special authorisation is also required for travel to Jizan, Asir, Najran, Qatif, Yanbu and Taif.
