U.S. warns Americans against travelling to Spain’s Ceuta over migration unrest
The United States of America has raised travel advisory level for North African enclave of Ceuta to Level 3, urging its citizens to reconsider travel to the enclave amid migration unrest.
The U.S. State Department, in a statement on Saturday, said that the “massive and uncontrolled arrival of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta may lead to unpredictable and dangerous security situations.”
Advising travellers to exercise increased caution, the advisory warned that terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Spain and might target tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets and others.
The People Gazette reported that 72 migrants died as thousands on Thursday stormed the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the situation deserved an immediate response, including mobilising resources and working with international authorities.
The country’s interior ministry later estimated that more than 50,000 migrants entered Ceuta irregularly, adding, most had been returned as of weekend.
The migration crisis is set to be discussed by European Union justice and interior ministers at a meeting on Tuesday.
