UEFA to move Champions League away from Russia: Report
Due to lingering hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, UEFA is set to move the Champions League finals scheduled to hold in Russian city of St Petersburg in May.
“The final was due to take place at the 68,000-capacity Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg on May 28 but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has called an “extraordinary meeting” of the Executive Committee for Friday to confirm the decision to move the match,” Skysport reported on Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, UEFA in a statement said, “following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET (0900 GMT), in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions.”
In another statement on Thursday, UEFA condemned Russia invasion of Ukraine, adding that “Decisions will be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee and announced tomorrow (Friday).
“UEFA shares the international community’s significant concern for the security situation developing in Europe and strongly condemns the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine,” the statement reads in part.
