Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as the chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement, on Tuesday called for dialogue to resolve the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Mr Museveni emphasised that the use of force should be limited to legitimate self-defense and not employed for aggression.

“We appeal and advise the actors in the Middle East to draw back from the use of force and return to principled diplomacy. Iran and the Islamists should listen to our advice to recognise Israel, and Israel should implement the two-state solution,” Mr Museveni said.

Mr Museveni noted that multiple mistakes were made by both regional and international actors involved in the Middle East.

He criticised the position of some Iranian Islamists who deny Israel’s right to exist, while also faulting Israel for not honouring the two-state solution.

Mr Museveni argued that the situation was worsened by external forces with selfish interests.

The Non-Aligned Movement is a forum for 120 member states guided by the Bandung Principles. The principles include respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, recognition of the equality of all races and nations, large and small, and abstention from intervention or interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
