UK charges man over alleged al-Shabaab links
A British man has been charged with terrorism offences over alleged links to Somalia-based militant group al-Shabaab, the Metropolitan Police said on Thursday.
Jermaine Grant, 43, is accused of directing the group’s activities between December 31, 2007, and January 1, 2010.
He is also alleged to have attended an al-Shabaab training camp in Kismayu on three occasions, contrary to Section 8 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Mr Grant was further charged with two counts of possessing an AK-47 rifle for terrorist purposes, in breach of Section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The charges followed a long-running investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London.
Acting CTP Commander Kris Wright described the allegations as serious.
“These are serious charges and come as the result of a long-running investigation.
“This case shows we will always pursue anyone suspected of involvement in terrorist activity, regardless of where or when it is alleged to have occurred,” Mr Wright said.
Mr Grant is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
