Nigerian Anthony Esan is set to be sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court in the UK for the attempted murder of an army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton.

Mr Esan stabbed Mr Teeton at Sally Port Gardens, near Brompton Barracks, Chatham, on July 23, 2024.

At the sentencing, which commenced on Monday and will last three days, the court heard that Mr Esan’s attack on Mr Teeton was “vicious and deliberate.”

On January 8, Mr Esan pleaded guilty to attempted murder and two charges of possessing a knife at a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.  

Specialist prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service, Katie Samways, had said, “Anthony Esan carried out a violent attack on a member of our military who was simply walking along the street.

“Following an extensive police investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service worked to build the strongest possible case that left Esan with no alternative but to plead guilty.”
