The UK Health Security Agency has reported an increase in Cyclospora infections among people returning from overseas, with most cases linked to travel to Mexico.

The agency reported that 67 cases were recorded in travellers returning to England, Wales and Scotland between April 30 and July 15. 

Forty-eight individuals had recently travelled to Mexico. One traveller reported visiting both Mexico and the United States of America, while one had travelled only to the United States and another had visited Kenya.

This figure shows an unusual rise to the usual average of about 93 cases each year, recorded between 2022 and 2025. The UKHSA expects more travel-related cases to be reported during the holiday season.

The increase in UK cases comes as the United States of America continues to battle a larger cyclospora outbreak that has affected thousands of people, while authorities determine its source.

Cyclospora is a type of parasite that spreads through food or water contaminated with faeces from herbs, fruits and vegetables. 

The symptoms appear about two to fourteen days later and include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, mild fever and aches.

The agency advised travellers to drink bottled water, eat thoroughly cooked meals and avoid uncooked berries, fresh herbs, unpeeled fruit and salads while travelling.
