UK tribunal penalises lawyer Benedicte Mabika after assault conviction
A UK-based lawyer, Benedicte Mabika, was “reprimanded” after she was convicted of assault that caused her victim bodily harm.
The Bar Standards Board of England and Wales, the regulatory body for lawyers in England and Wales, on May 29, 2025, reprimanded Ms Mabika upon her conviction for assault.
“Ms Benedicte Mabika, a barrister and BSB-regulated person, behaved in a way which is likely to diminish the trust and confidence which the public places in her or in the profession and/or in a way which could reasonably be seen by the public to undermine her integrity, in that on 23 December 2023, she assaulted Person A thereby occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, contrary to Section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861,” the BSB stated.
Ms Mabika faced a disciplinary panel following an altercation in which she threw a bottle at a woman, injuring her at the Wax Bar in Nottingham on December 23, 2023.
Called to the Bar in 2023, Ms Mabika was convicted at Nottingham Magistrates Court on 18 July 2024 and received a financial penalty.
A three-man disciplinary panel set up by the BSB found Ms Mabika guilty of professional misconduct, contrary to Core Duty 5 and/or rC8 of the Code of Conduct of the Bar of England and Wales, as set out in the Bar Standards Board Handbook.
The disciplinary panel ordered Ms Mabika to pay £500 toward the Bar Standards Board’s costs.
