UK vows to keep backing Ukraine war efforts amid Russia’s threats
The United Kingdom, on Monday, pledged continued support for Ukraine amid threats from Russia. Andy Burnham said this during his first official visit to Ukraine since becoming UK prime minister in July.
“Despite Russia’s outrageous threats to my country, we will continue our support for Ukraine,” Mr Burnham declared in a speech in Kyiv to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
Mr Burnham, who accused Russia of fighting an illegal war, added, “This is the moment to keep up the pressure on Russia, the moment to squeeze their ability to fund this illegal war. Russia began this illegal invasion, and they could stop it at any given time.
“The sheer strength of the Ukrainian people is truly awesome. Ukraine has been Europe’s protector, not a drain on our security but the front line in keeping Europe safe. The Ukrainian people deserve not just our continued support but our gratitude and respect. The clear message to Putin should be that Ukraine will never give up territory that Russia cannot win on the battlefield.”
The UK prime minister further accused Russia of running out of options, noting that “Putin is now hoping he can win through a campaign of terror using ballistic missiles against Ukrainian civilians”.
Meanwhile, Russia faulted the UK for supporting Ukraine, particularly sharing classified information on British-made components used to make long-range missiles.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who addressed newsmen on Mr Burnham’s visit, accused the UK of “participating in this war” on Ukraine’s side.
“Britain is methodically and regularly adding fuel to the fire and methodically and regularly plotting to prevent any progress in the peace process,” Mr Peskov stated.
He added that the Russian military was already systematically gathering data to identify the location of any missile production sites and destroy them.
Amid the war, President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed that Ukraine would not surrender to Russia despite its desire for peace.
“Ukraine absolutely wants peace, but it is not ready to simply surrender,” Mr Zelensky said.
