The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) said on Tuesday that it had withdrawn the men’s world championships from Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Volleyball’s governing federation said it “remains gravely concerned by the escalating situation and for the safety of the people of Ukraine.”

It added that its board consequently concluded that “it would be impossible to prepare and stage the world championships in Russia due to the war in Ukraine.”

Russia was to host the championships between August 26 and September 11.

The FIVB had previously withdrawn Nations League games from Russia and said it would “seek an alternative host nation(s)” for the championships.
