A refinery in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk was damaged in overnight Russian drone strikes, according to local authorities.

“There was a fire. Emergency forces are working on site,’’ the military governor of the Poltava region, Dmytro Lunin, said on his Telegram channel on Wednesday morning.

The refinery has been shut down for the time being, but there were no deaths or injuries, according to Lunin.

Kremenchuk, an industrial city, has been shelled several times since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 due to its strategic importance as an oil processing site.

Lunin said that the refinery has also been singled out for attack.

Most notably, a shopping centre in the city was hit by a Russian missile last summer, killing more than 20 civilians.

In total, Russia attacked Ukraine with 24 drones overnight, targeting the north and centre of the country, according to the General Staff in Kyiv.

The military said 17 of the drones were destroyed in its situation report.

The drones were shot down in Sumy, Poltava, Kirovograd and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
