António Guterres has condemned Israel’s large-scale airstrikes in Lebanon, warning that hundreds of civilians, including children, have been killed or injured, and significant civilian infrastructure has been damaged.

“The secretary-general unequivocally condemns the massive strikes,” said his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement on Wednesday. “He strongly condemns the loss of civilian lives and is deeply alarmed by the mounting toll on civilians.”

The strikes occurred amidst a ceasefire in the conflict with Iran. Israeli forces targeted areas, including the capital, Beirut.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 182 people have died.

Israel said its operations focused on Hezbollah commanders and military infrastructure, while Lebanese authorities reported that many casualties were civilians.

Unlike Iran, the United States and Israel do not consider Lebanon part of the agreed two-week ceasefire.

Reports from the Iranian news agency Fars suggest Tehran is considering withdrawing from the truce.
