UN envoy visits Nigeria for high-level consultations ahead of 2027 polls
The United Nations special representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mr Leonardo Santos Simão, is in Nigeria from November 1 to 7.
His visit is for high-level consultations with political leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mr Simão’s visit is also aimed at promoting peaceful democracy, and strengthening electoral processes.
He will also hold meetings with government officials and key democratic institutions.
The envoy is expected to engage key institutions and leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and other stakeholders to discuss key preparations and electoral processes.
The 2027 general elections are expected to be conducted peacefully to strengthen democratic institutions, prevent any act of electoral manipulation and conflict that could tarnish Nigeria’s democracy.
A meeting between the UNOWAS representative, Mr Simão and the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, Tony Ojukwu, dwelt on safeguarding voting rights, tackling misinformation and hate speech, and strengthening accountability ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections. The discussions noted that “free and fair elections depend on respect for human rights.”
The United Nations office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) is known for its reputation in maintaining peace and security, protecting human rights and ensuring peaceful coexistence among member states.
During his consultation in Nigeria, Mr Simão is expected to contribute to safeguarding democracy, promoting peaceful elections, and encouraging popular participation of youths and women in the 2027 general elections.
