UN says over 43,000 directly affected by Afghanistan’s latest quakes
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over 43,000 people have been directly affected by the recent earthquakes in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat.
OCHA stated that the Injil district was the worst affected, with 53 per cent of those affected.
Most of the villages there have been completely flattened.
According to the UN, over 90 per cent of the casualties are women and children.
People in the province are forced to sleep in open spaces outside their homes.
On Monday, the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) referred to it as a ‘tent city.’
On October 7, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres, resulting in the reported death of about 2,400 people, according to the latest figures from the Taliban-run government.
The UN estimates the death toll at 1,384 people.
Several aftershocks have already hit the affected area.
The UN is appealing for $93.6 million to support the earthquake response.
