UNFPA trains Bauchi journalists on reproductive health, GBV reporting

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has commenced training of 20 journalists on reporting reproductive health, maternal health, gender equality and gender-based violence (GBV).
The Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) organised the training in partnership with the Bauchi State Ministry of Budget, Economic Planning and Multilateral Coordination, with funding from UNFPA.
Speaking at the two-day capacity-building workshop event on Friday in Bauchi, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Ibrahim Rufai, thanked UNFPA for its continued partnership and support for population and development priorities in the state.
Mr Rufai said responsible communication can help address harmful practices, correct misconceptions, amplify the voices of vulnerable groups, and encourage positive social change.
He said the training was timely, as it would strengthen the capacity of the media sub-implementing partners to develop and disseminate accurate, evidence-based, inclusive and culturally appropriate messages.
Mr Rufai urged participants to improve their communication skills, deepen their understanding of UNFPA programmes and strengthen collaboration with government institutions and other stakeholders.
The permanent secretary reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working with UNFPA, the media and other stakeholders to promote inclusive development and improve residents’ well-being.
Audu Alayande, UNFPA assistant representative and officer-in-charge of its Kaduna Sub-office, commended J4PD for promoting the visibility of the UNFPA activities in Bauchi.
Mr Alayande said the training was aimed at strengthening journalists’ understanding of UNFPA programmes and reporting guidelines.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would help reach target audiences with information on interventions to improve access to quality healthcare.
Earlier, Elizabeth Kah, executive director of J4PD, commended UNFPA and the ministry for allowing J4PD to serve as the programme’s visibility partner.
She described the experience as rewarding and expressed confidence that the training would improve journalists’ understanding and reporting of UNFPA interventions.
Ms Kah stressed the need for accurate reporting to support programme objectives and promote a healthier society.
The participants were drawn from print, broadcast and online media, and government officials.
