President of the Pan-African Parliament, Fateh Boutbig, is leading a high-level parliamentary delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), holding in New York, United States, from September 22 to 29, 2026.

PAP, in a statement on Tuesday, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said Mr Boutbig, will deliver keynote addresses at Heal@UNGA81 and the Global Distinguished Leadership Award Ceremony, as well as contribute to a parliamentary dialogue on the role of legislative leadership in building thriving and climate-resilient economies.

PAP said the delegation would participate in the general debate and some high-level meetings to discuss the right to development, climate action and a just transition, the threats posed by sea-level rise, pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, and the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

According to the statement, the delegation will, at the event, advance African perspectives in international deliberations and reinforce parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for promoting peace, sustainable development, human rights, good governance and continental integration.

Mr Boutbig, ahead of the UNGA81 event said, “The Pan-African Parliament carries the voices and aspirations of the African people. Our participation in the United Nations General Assembly is an opportunity to ensure that African priorities are reflected in global discussions and that parliamentary perspectives contribute meaningfully to the decisions shaping our shared future.”

PAP, which is the legislative organ of the African Union, said the delegation will, on the margins of UNGA81, undertake bilateral engagements and courtesy calls to strengthen cooperation with AU institutions, diplomatic representatives and international parliamentary and development partners.

It stated that the mission of the delegation at the event, supports the objectives of the PAP Strategic Plan 2024–2028, particularly its commitment to strengthening the Parliament’s representative role in continental and international decision-making. 

It also reflects it’s mandate to provide a platform through which African citizens and grassroots organisations can contribute to deliberations on matters affecting the continent.
