UNIBEN student shot dead, one critically injured by gunmen

The police command in Edo has confirmed the killing of Augustine Izu, a final year Political Science student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The police command in Edo has confirmed the killing of Augustine Izu, a final year Political Science student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The spokesman for the command, Bello Kontongs, disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin.

Mr Bello also confirmed the shooting of Joshua Oginigbo, a Computer Engineering student of the institution.

The spokesman, however, assured that the public that the police would bring the assailants to book.

Mr Izu was killed by unknown gunmen hours after writing his final examination on Thursday.

He was trailed to his off-campus hostel at 5, Image Street, off Federal Road, Ugbowo, Benin, by his assailants who shot him dead in his room.

The assailants, numbering four and fully masked-up, carried out the dastardly act in the presence of the deceased’s friend, Emeka Walter.

The gunmen also shot Mr Walter in the arm.

Mr Oginigbo was shot in the head on Tuesday by unknown gunmen around the June 12 Secretariat on the campus.

The victim is in critical condition and receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

It was gathered that both shootings were cult-related.
