The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) have concluded their ‘Voices Beyond Walls’ music therapy initiative at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

The programme was led by Florence Nweke, Associate Professor in the Department of Music and Sound Production, Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in collaboration with CELSIR.

During interactive sessions, participants were trained to improve their confidence in social interactions within correctional environments through the power of music.

Participants were regarded as learners rather than inmates and were encouraged to see the programme as a safe space.

Students also led several training sessions, including rhythm exercises, warm-up sessions, and breathing exercises. The programme also allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life rehabilitation settings.

Carefully selected songs reflecting the key themes of friendship, gratitude and hope were used to help participants overcome anxiety and sadness.

The songs included “How Are You My Friend” by Johnny Drille, “Dupe Lowo Baba”, arranged by Seun Owoaje, “Pray For Me” by Dare Art Alade, “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson, and “Kabiyesi” by Olaolu Lawal.

The project attracted many volunteers over time following the programme’s success.

One volunteer named the choir the “Voice Club”, and the name also inspired custom T-shirts produced by the coordinators.
