Union Demands: ASUU, LASUED meet to resolve crisis
The Lagos State University of Education’s management has met with the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ LASUED chapter to resolve conflicts and halt the imminent crisis in the school.
The session was held at the vice-chancellor’s office after the union’s congress in the school earlier on Tuesday.
A similar meeting was held on Monday to proffer a soft landing for the parties to broker peace. On Saturday, at a news conference held in the school, the union reeled out demands and challenges militating against effective teaching and learning in the institution, which is barely three years old.
The union had listed some challenges, including poor staff welfare package, dearth of facilities, epileptic electricity supply and non-existent internet network connectivity.
Others are lopsided admission process challenges in teaching and learning in the school’s two campuses at Epe and Ijanikin Lagos State, among others.
Speaking in an interview before the session, the LASUED vice-chancellor, Bidemi Lafiaji-Okunneye, said the institution had just undergone the National Universities Commission’s accreditation with commendation from the commission for improved infrastructures and amenities to enhance teaching and learning.
Ms Lafiaji-Okunneye, who described the union’s alleged misgivings as trump-up allegations, said that the management had been up and doing in providing aid to teaching and learning in the community.
She said that the institution, despite not having internally generated revenue, had refurbished lecture theatres and office buildings in the last two years to encourage teaching and learning.
The university boss did not disclose an amicable resolution with ASUU-LASUED and asked the union to conduct its affairs within stipulated labour rules and not to resort to unruly acts.
The ASUU-LASUED chairman, Akolade Lapite, said the union was open to negotiation and interfacing with management to resolve the issue.
Mr Akolade said the union was procedural in its approach to improving the institution with needed infrastructure, amenities and staff welfare, which he said were cardinal to the pressure group.
