Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has resisted extradition to New York.

Mr Mangione was charged in Manhattan on Monday with second-degree murder, forgery, and multiple firearm-related offences.

According to The New York Times, Mr Mangione’s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, confirmed his client is contesting extradition.

“He is contesting it,” Mr Dickey said at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where Mr Mangione appeared for an extradition hearing on Tuesday.

Mr Mangione’s charges stem from the December 4 killing of Mr Thompson.

Authorities have suggested Mr Mangione saw the killing as a symbolic gesture targeting what he perceived as corruption within the healthcare industry.

A manifesto allegedly written by Mr Mangione and recovered at the time of his arrest referred to Mr Thompson’s death as a “symbolic takedown” of what Mr Mangione called the industry’s “corruption and power games.”

The manifesto stated, “Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.”

Mr Mangione displayed physical and verbal resistance during his court appearance, struggling against officers as they escorted him into the courthouse.
