Mohamed Farouk, an Egyptian referee has been placed on indefinite suspension by the Egypt Football Association for controversially using a mobile phone to rule out a goal in a league match.

The referee made global headlines last week after employing a spectator’s mobile phone to cancel out Al-Nasr’s late equaliser away at Suez in a Egyptian second division league match on Friday.

Though the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is not currently in use in second tier division, Farouk decided to improvise after the home side protested a handball.

Shortly after the incident, Suez went on to score their third goal of the game and won 3-1.

The incident caused massive rage among Al-Nasr’s players and officials towards the referee with Farouk needing to be escorted out of the pitch under police protection.

The Egyptian Referees Committee, headed by Vitor Pereira, has now made the decision to place Farouk and the entire match officials for the game on suspension for “indefinite period.”

“The committee decided to investigate the incident when Mohamed Farouk, the referee of the match, used a mobile phone to review footage of the match’s events,” the Egyptian FA said.
