Volleyball federation promises hitch-free Super Cup ahead of Monday kickoff

The Chairman of the League Management Committee of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Adamu Tenimu, has assured of a hitch-free Super Cup ahead of the competition’s serve off on Monday.
Mr Tenimu said this after the technical meeting held on Sunday in Abuja, which formally marked the commencement of the Super Cup competition.
The 2025 Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) Super Cup will officially serve off at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, with 12 clubs competing in the men’s and women’s categories.
Mr Tenimu noted that the Super Cup had historically been part of the federation’s annual calendar, but l not been staged in recent years.
According to him, the current leadership of the NVBF has revived the competition as part of efforts to develop volleyball in Nigeria.
Mr Tenimu said, “The Super Cup has always been part of the federation’s programmes, but for some reasons, it could not be staged. As a new federation, we decided to bring it back to help develop the game to the level it is expected to be.”
Speaking with journalists, Mr Tenimu said the technical meeting marked the formal serve off of the competition.
“We have reviewed everything that needs to be reviewed and reached agreements on how the competition will be played,” he said.
Mr Tenimu said that the federation had put in place adequate security, medical and welfare arrangements to ensure a smooth and hitch-free tournament.
“We have made comprehensive security and protocol arrangements, with all stakeholders fully involved. The clubs are also responsible for the welfare of their players,” he said.
The official added that participating teams would be accommodated within the stadium complex to minimise movement throughout the duration of the competition.
According to him, a medical seminar has been scheduled for February 5 for players, coaches and officials as part of measures to safeguard the health and safety of all participants.
He disclosed that matches would begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, adding that fans would witness “the Super Cup of a new era.”
The Super Cup features six teams each in the men’s and women’s categories, drawn from the top three clubs in both the Premier and Division I leagues.
“The teams were divided into pools rather than a round-robin format. Winners will emerge from the pools, with the first and second teams advancing to the semifinals and finals, while the remaining teams will play ranking matches. The competition would produce final rankings from first to sixth place in both categories,” he stated.
Mr Tenimu also said that prize money would be awarded to the teams finishing first, second, and third, while the champions would also receive the Super Cup shield.
The tournament is scheduled to run from February 2 to 9, after which all clubs are expected to depart Abuja.
