President Muhammadu Buhari has told Nigerians to avoid allowing a return of the Peoples Democratic Party to power next year.

The Nigerian leader said he feared the party would take the citizens backwards.

“We should not allow the PDP to draw the country backwards,” Mr Buhari said the ruling All Progressives Congress’ national convention and presidential primary on Wednesday morning.

The PDP was in power when Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999 until 2015 when Mr Buhari became the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president.

Mr Buhari’s comments came hours after the PDP 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar urged Nigerians to reject the APC at the poll next year, saying the upcoming election will be a referendum on the ruling party’s eight years in office.
