The West African Examinations Council has said its exams will be held as scheduled despite the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress and its affiliated unions.

The exam body disclosed this in a memo addressed to school principals, dated May 31 and signed by A T.A.Y Lawson on behalf of WAEC Head of National Office.

“Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled,” WAEC said in the memo.

The exam body explained that its scheduled exams are holding across West African countries and the Nigerian child should not be put to an advantage to miss the examination.

“In as much as we share the concerns of the unions and the generality of Nigerians, the WASSCE SC is going on across the member Countries of WAEC and the Nigerian Child should not be put to a disadvantage of missing the exam,” WAEC added.

The NLC and the Trade Union of Nigeria have declared an indefinite nationwide strike over federal government failure to meet their demands on minimum wage increment.

The NLC is demanding N494,000 minimum wage based on spiking cost of living, while the federal government is offering to pay N60,000.
