We mistakenly slammed 200% tariff on Nigerian data services: MTN

Telecoms giant, MTN, has described as an error its recent hike in its data bundle charges, apologising to its subscribers.
MTN increased the price of 15G by 200%, among many others, as a response to the 50% telecom tariff increase recently approved by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.
However, MTN, in a statement on Thursday to its 15G digital bundle lovers, said the hike was a mistake, urging its customers to “forgive and forget.’’
The statement rendered in Pidgin read, “Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives on Tuesday asked the minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commissions, to suspend the hike in telecommunications tariffs, demanding improvement of the services offered by the telecom companies.
Similarly, the National Association of Telecommunication Subscribers called on the NCC to sanction telecom operators for a breach of agreement.
NATCOMS President, Deolu Ogunbanjo, said on Wednesday that any telecom operator implementing the tariff hike was breaching the agreement by the NCC and the Nigeria Labour Congress.
Mr Ogunbanjo insisted the NCC agreed to hold a stakeholders’ meeting with the NLC, subscribers, and telecom operators within two weeks to discuss the issue of tariff hike.
