Team Nigeria on Tuesday won two more medals at the ongoing Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt, as Edidiong Umoafia claimed two silver medals.

The 2022 Commonwealth bronze medalist lifted 144kg in snatch and 170kg in clean and jerk, for a total of 314.

A statement from Media Officer, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Amaechi Agbo, on Tuesday stated that Umoafia competed in the 73kg men’s category to claim the two silver medals.

“Umoafia’s win automatically takes Nigeria’s medal haul at the championship to eight. Rafiatu Lawal and Adijat Olarinoye had earlier the same day won three gold and three silver medals, respectively,” Mr Agbo said.

He said Team Nigeria is expected to win more medals at the championship on Wednesday when Joy Eze Ogbonne competes in the 71kg women’s category by 11:00 a.m. Nigeria time.

The Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship also serves as a Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier.

Team Nigeria weightlifters are also expected to participate in the final qualifying campaign holding from March 31 to April 11, 2024, in Phuket, Thailand.
